The aviation industry is progressively adjusting their discourse to the ‘net zero carbon emissions by 2050’ objective. An example of this adjustment is that airlines are making concerted efforts to reduce fuel emissions that currently account for over 90% of the overall aviation carbon footprint.

Q&A with Mohit Mehta
Global Head of Sustainability at Populous
In an age where sustainability is a core tenet and aspiration of society, it is a principal that underpins all of Populous work, and is fundamental to the evolution of the practice. Mohit Mehta is the Populous Global Head of Sustainability, a new role working alongside regional sustainability leads to ensure environmentally sustainable design (ESD) is further embedded across the company’s portfolio.

First Nations Collaborative Design Research
Wiigulga Sports Complex
A recent Populous project that connects with First Nations cultures is Wiigulga Sports Complex, which was renamed from ‘Woolgoolga’ in 2021 to reflect the local Gumbaynggirr name for the site, referring to the locally found black apple tree. The sports complex is a long-awaited multipurpose venue providing an inclusive and engaging space for the local community to celebrate, learn, play and perform together.

Strasbourg’s Stade de la Meinau Renovation Project Announced
Stade de la Meinau
Populous has been appointed as Lead Architect for the EUR100 million Stade de la Meinau renovation project in Strasbourg, France. It will incorporate new environmentally sustainable design features into the building with sustainability key to the design strategy, including an innovative upcycling approach to reuse Airbus A340 fuselages for the main façade sunshade

A Global Pioneer in Stadium Design
Stadium Australia (Accor Stadium)
It all started in 1993 when the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games bid team pitched an additional angle to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to support the ‘Green Games’. In an era where the environment was a major global, political and economic concern the IOC had expressed a desire to apply an environmental dimension to the next Games with concepts such as sustainable urban development.

Stadium Australia (Accor Stadium)
The green footprint of Stadium Australia leveraged the Olympics into new territory while also launching Australia’s future in environmental design and sustainable infrastructure. For the Populous team, designing ESD principles into the stadium, while also designing one of the largest capacity Olympic stadiums ever built, they had an additional design challenge to consider.

Top Honors for Environmental Design
CommBank Stadium
The Populous-designed Bankwest Stadium is the first stadium in the world to announce it has received LEED v4 Gold certification for sustainability by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). It is also the first building in Australia to receive LEED v4 Gold certification.

First LEED Certified Sports and Entertainment Facility in Las Vegas
T-Mobile Arena
The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification to T-Mobile Arena, a 20,000-seat sports and entertainment venue which opened in April of 2016 in Las Vegas.
